Division Rules
STEERS
  1. Steers will be pre-tagged, and exhibitors will draw numbers matching steer tags. Example: If a student draws #15, the exhibitor receives the steer tagged with #15.

  2. Steer prices will be kept as close to market price as possible. Any remaining amount plus other additional expenses incurred will be collected prior to the WGLS validation drawing (date to be determined). State validation will be done in June.

  3. The WGLS Board of Directors will determine show classes.

  4. The minimum weight of steers is 1050 pounds (25 pound weight tolerance is allowed). There are no maximum weight requirements for the WGLS Steer Show.

  5. Weight classes will be determined by the Division and/or General Superintendent but must be no more than 3 classes and at least 4 steers in each class.

  6. No more than two (2) steers may be purchased per exhibitor.

  7. Steers may be family validated.

  8. Steers will be shown slick sheared.

  9. The WGLS Board of Directors accept no responsibility or liability for steers after exhibitor receives ownership at the validation drawing. This includes the loading and/or unloading of steers at the time of the drawing or at the stock show.

  10. Junior and Senior Showmanship will be judged and awarded for exhibitors who register for the showmanship competition.

LAMBS
  1. Wethers and Ewes may be shown.

  2. Commercial classes will be shown by weight or by the discretion of the WGLS Board of Directors.

  3. Open classes will be shown by breed or by a designated combination of breeds as determined by the WGLS Board of Directors. (Example: The WGLS Board may determine to combine Southdown with Medium Wool or Fine Wool may be combined with Fine Wool Crosses). Open Show order will be Southdown, Fine Wool, Fine Wool Crosses, Medium Wool. 

  4. Weight classes will be determined by the Division and/or General Superintendent. Weight limits are as follows:
    Southdown Minimum Weight     80 pounds
    All Others    Minimum Weight     90 pounds 

  5. All lambs must be shorn slick before arrival to the show grounds.

  6. Wool must be the same length over the entire body.

  7. Boots are permissible.

  8. No teeth requirement on lambs.

  9. A minimum of seven (7) lambs must show per Open and Commercial class.

  10. Thirty (30) or more lambs from the same breed will be divided into three (3) classes.

  11. WGLS validation is required for all commercial show entries.

  12. County or State validation is required for all open show entries.

  13. Lamb pens will be assigned at the show by the Lamb Superintendent.

  14. The WGLS Board of Directors accept no responsibility or liability for lambs after exhibitor receives ownership at the validation drawing. This includes the loading and/or unloading of lambs at the time of the drawing or at the stock show.

  15. Junior and Senior Showmanship will be judged and awarded for exhibitors who register for the showmanship competition.

GOATS
  1. Wethers and Does may be shown.

  2. All goats must weigh a minimum 50 pounds and maximum of 115 pounds (five-pound weight tolerance is allowed)

  3. All market goats must be slick sheared before arrival to show grounds. No more than ¼ inch of hair allowed above the hocks.

  4. Weight classes will be determined by the Division and/or General Superintendent.

  5. Horns must be tipped.

  6. WGLS validation is required for all commercial show entries.

  7. County or State validation is required for all open show entries.

  8. No teeth requirement on goats.

  9. Thirty (30) or more goats will be divided into three (3) classes.

  10. Division class champions will be determined as entries dictate at the discretion of the WGLS Board of Directors (may have up to 9 weight classes and 3 division champions in Commercial Show)

  11. Goat pens will be assigned by the Goat Superintendent.

  12. The WGLS Board of Directors accept no responsibility or liability for goats after exhibitor receives ownership at the validation drawing. This includes the loading and/or unloading of goats at the time of the drawing or at the stock show.

  13. Junior and Senior Showmanship will be judged and awarded for exhibitors who register for the showmanship competition.

SWINE
  1. Barrows and Gilts may be shown.

  2. All swine must weigh a minimum of 200 pounds and a maximum of 300 pounds. (Five-pound weight tolerance is allowed).

  3. Thirty (30) or more pigs from the same breed will be divided into three (3) classes.

  4. Division class champions will be determined as entries dictate at the discretion of the WGLS Board of Directors (may have up to 9 weight classes and 3 division champions in Commercial Show)

  5. Each open breed must have a minimum of seven (7) entries to be placed in the show order. Otherwise, the breed will be placed in the OPB (Other Pure Breeds) division or Cross division if the OPB division has less than seven (7) entries. The Open Show order will be OPB, Duroc, Hampshire, Yorkshire, Crosses. Other recognized Pure Breeds may be placed alphabetically in the show order if there are seven (7) or more entries identified by the classifying judge.

  6. Classes within the OPB division will be determined by the WGLS Board of Directors. Example: If the OPB division has 14 or more entries, they may be subdivided by weight or by down ear breeds and up eared breeds.

  7. Weight classes will be determined by the Division and/or General Superintendent.

  8. WGLS validation is required for all commercial show entries.

  9. County or State validation is required for all open show entries.

  10. Swine pens will be assigned by the Swine Superintendent.

  11. The WGLS Board of Directors accept no responsibility or liability for swine after exhibitor receives ownership at the validation drawing. This includes the loading and/or unloading of swine at the time of the drawing or at the stock show.

  12. Junior and Senior Showmanship will be judged and awarded for exhibitors who register for the showmanship competition.

RABBITS
  1. Three (3) rabbits constitute one (1) pen, unit, or entry.

  2. Rabbits must have a minimum weight of three (3) pounds and a maximum weight of 5 ½ pounds (5 pounds and 8 ounces). No weight tolerance is allowed.

  3. Exhibitors may enter a maximum of two (2) pens of rabbits.

  4. All breeds will be classified as Californian.

  5. Rabbits must have no deformed teeth, ear canker, or disease.

  6. There are no age requirements for rabbits.

  7. Junior and Senior Showmanship will be judged and awarded for exhibitors who register for the showmanship competition.

GENERAL POULTRY
  1. The Poultry Show shall consist of Turkey Division and Broiler Division.

  2. A check-in slip must be filled out identifying wing band numbers of each bird being shown. The check-in slip must be provided when checking in the exhibitor’s entry of birds or pen of birds.

  3. Each exhibitor is responsible for their own pen space and must help clean show area and staging area at the conclusion of the show.

  4. Parents and guardians are not allowed in show ring or sift ring. If an exhibitor needs assistance showing a bird or pen of birds, it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to find other exhibitors to assist. Student volunteers will be available.

  5. Birds with exterior parasites, broken wings, or severe bruising will be sifted at the judge’s discretion.

TURKEY
  1. The Poultry Show shall consist of Turkey Division and Broiler Division.

  2. A check-in slip must be filled out identifying wing band numbers of each bird being shown. The check-in slip must be provided when checking in the exhibitor’s entry of birds or pen of birds.

  3. Each exhibitor is responsible for their own pen space and must help clean show area and staging area at the conclusion of the show.

  4. Parents and guardians are not allowed in show ring or sift ring. If an exhibitor needs assistance showing a bird or pen of birds, it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to find other exhibitors to assist. Student volunteers will be available.

  5. Birds with exterior parasites, broken wings, or severe bruising will be sifted at the judge’s discretion.

​BROILERS
  1. Pullets and Cockerels will be shown.

  2. An entry consists of three (3) chickens.

  3. Pullets and Cockerels will show in separate classes. All three chickens in each pen must be of the same sex. If the judge determines that there are both pullets and cockerels in the same pen, the pen will be shown as a pen of cockerels.

  4. Exhibitors may show one (1) pen of pullets and one (1) pen of cockerels or two (2) pens of the same sex.

  5. Each pen must arrive in their own cage, crate, or box and be presented to the judge for pre-judging as a group. No substitution of birds is allowed once the pen is presented for pre-judging.

  6. Wing bands will be checked during pre-judging to ensure they are within the range of bands assigned to the exhibitor. If any wing band is not within the assigned range, the pen will be sifted.

  7. Only birds purchased from the Texas Stock Show Association and possessing the official wing bands will be used for the WGLS.

  8. The number of birds purchased for the WGLS is 25 per exhibitor. The Poultry Superintendent will identify and record wing band numbers for all birds eligible for the WGLS at the time of pick up. Families with multiple exhibitors may purchase and show from one group of 25 birds.

  9. Birds must possess a wing band from the recorded range of 25 assigned to each exhibitor. Missing wing bands or wing bands outside of the assigned range will cause the entire pen to be sifted.

  10. Purchase request for birds must be submitted to the ASTA Ag Department by September 3, 2024. Payment by cash or check must accompany the request.

  11. The Poultry Superintendent will notify FFA or 4H leaders as to the pick-up date of their broilers.

  12. The WGLS will assume no responsibility for birds after they are transferred to the exhibitors.

  13. The Grand and Reserve Grand Champions will be chosen from the winners of the Pullet and Cockrell divisions.​​
